(Antique Print.)

Britannia Bridge, Anglesey.

Date. [c.1850.]

London. Le Blond & Company. Image size 2 5/8 X 3 7/8ins. Page size 6 x 4 1/2 ins. £45.00

The company of Le Blond was formed by the brothers Abraham and Robert, in Stepney, London. They were the first company to take a licence from George Baxter's colour printing process in 1849. Colour printing had been practised for many years but was quite basic, using only a limited number of colours. The Baxter patented process meant an initial printing from a steel key plate, which gave the black outline and all the intricate detail and shading, then they would apply up to 20 different blocks made from either wood, copper or zinc - one for each colour they wanted to apply. Each block had to align perfectly. This key plate made all the difference and gave their images sharpness never before achieved.
